What To Expect

Sunday Evening Bible Study

Coffee is ready by 5:30 so come early and hang out. Beginning at 6:00 we sing some songs of thanksgiving and praise - some modern, some classics, some hymns.  Following that we have a Bible study led by Pastor David Simonson.  He teaches exegetically, which means that he teaches straight through one book of the Bible at a time without skipping any troublesome verses along the way.  Following Bible study is a community meal.  Each family brings an ingredient that contributes to the whole.  Currently we’re having build-your-own tacos! Dress is casual and all ages meet together at the same time.

Wednesday Youth Group

Our hosts are ready by 5:30 so come early and hang out and play games. Beginning at 6:15 we sing some songs of thanksgiving and praise - some modern, some classics, some hymns.  Following that we have a Bible study led by Pastor David Simonson. His lessons are substantially similar to his Sunday lessons but modified for a younger audience.  He teaches exegetically, which means straight through one book of the Bible at a time.  Following Bible study is a community meal.  Each family brings something to share and compliment our main course, waffles! Dress is casual and all ages meet together. When it’s warm enough for it, bring your swimsuit to swim after dinner.

Who we are

Our Story

Castroville Community Church began in the fall of 2019 just months before the pandemic shut everything down.  It started as a family Bible study and dinner fellowship in the living room of Pastor David Simonson and soon began meeting in the Castroville Library.  But once Covid became widespread we moved back to his home and have been meeting (and eating) there ever since.

In 2022 we added another small community aimed at teenagers which meets in the Carpenters’ home.  We call it Waffle Wednesdays and, as you may have guessed, we serve waffles(!) along with a Bible study, music and games aimed at a younger crowd.  Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome too, of course.

Our Mission

It appears that many large churches work hard to create small communities from their larger ones.  Why do they do that? Because the Gospel of Jesus is best lived out life on life and that is hard to achieve in a large auditorium.  But it is much more natural and organic in a small, cross-generational environment.  We’ve decided, therefore, to skip the step of growing a large crowd only to divide it later and stick with a small group fellowship and multiply that instead.  We’re rediscovering, as it were, the beauty inherent in small, intimate, cross-generational gatherings where each person can contribute their gifts in a significant way.

The most important aspect of this model is that it relies on the church gathered to do the work of ministry.  As opposed to a large church model whereby the members can simply invite people to church and hand over ministry work to the “professionals”, a small group model keeps ministry in the hands of the community.  For when we sit down together to sing or eat and talk and pray it is the lives of the individuals that become the basis for ministry, not the programs.  The Gospel and love of God is transferred from person to person as we simply live life together as a small group community.

If you are looking for a large church community with lots of programs to plug into there are several great options in Castroville and the surrounding areas.  If, however, you are looking for a more intimate gathering of Christ followers that is small on purpose, then this may be a good place for you.

Furthermore, please reach out to Pastor David if you would like to host such a gathering at your home, or barn, or guest house, or wherever.  He is committed to teaching the Bible and the Grace of Jesus Christ wherever opportunity may arise and welcomes any chance to do so, even at your place.
